FIRST FLOOR

A precious Art Nouveau villa nestled in the inner courtyard of a late nineteenth-century building, along Viale di Trastevere. A hidden gem transformed by the studio into the urban refuge of a couple, whose original function remains uncertain: perhaps the house of the old station's caretaker, then a doctor's office, according to the neighborhood's memory.
The project, which develops on three levels for a total of 80 square meters culminating in a terrace overlooking the greenery, starts from the valorization of the pre-existing unique elements. The recovery of the entrance veranda with its green, pink, and yellow leaded cathedral glasses required a complex, philological, and functional approach: the original score was respected in the design and in the sought-after chromatic nuances, while the structure was replaced with a steel and solar control glass frame.
The intervention focused on the functional reorganization of the internal space, limited and fragmented by the old spiral staircase, which was flanked by work on the perception of each individual environment and its atmosphere. A radical but sensitive rewriting: by moving the kitchenette close to the new veranda, space is freed for an alternating chestnut wood staircase, whose first step, covered in Verde Alpi marble, acts as a sculptural base for a bookcase integrated into the under-stairs. A container volume adjacent to the staircase, also in chestnut but with mirrored doors, conceals the laundry room and expands the view.
The living room gains breadth, thanks to the generous double-height window that frames the surrounding gardens, in dialogue with the iconic Falkland suspensions by Munari of the interiors. Strategically emptied in correspondence with the window to create a double height and give light and openness, the mezzanine integrates a suggestive play of transparencies and reflections.
Portions of the structural glass floor open glimpses of the lower floor, while the intrados of the structure with mirrored panels triggers a perspective game that illusorily stretches the blue volume of the services upwards.
A second spiral staircase connects the sleeping area with the upper level. Its raw iron structure and cherry wood steps make it a sculptural element around which the study area gravitates. A glass wall, which echoes the design of the veranda with an alternation of transparent and ribbed glass, elegantly screens the services. Set in the most authentic Trastevere, the intervention interprets its spirit.
